Diamond Clarity Explained: Inclusions, Grades and Value
Clarity describes the internal and external characteristics found in a diamond. These natural features help make every stone individual, and many are difficult—or impossible—to see without magnification.
What are inclusions and blemishes?
Internal characteristics are generally called inclusions, while surface characteristics are called blemishes. They may take forms such as tiny crystals, feathers, clouds or surface marks. Their size, number, position, nature and visibility all contribute to the clarity grade.
The clarity scale in plain language
Clarity grades range from Flawless at the top through Included grades. Between them are categories such as Internally Flawless, Very Very Slightly Included, Very Slightly Included and Slightly Included. Grading is performed under controlled magnification, so a lower grade does not automatically mean a visibly imperfect diamond.
Why “eye-clean” matters
An eye-clean diamond has no inclusions that are readily visible without magnification under normal viewing conditions. For many buyers, this is a practical sweet spot: the diamond looks clean and beautiful while avoiding a premium for rarity that may not be visible in everyday wear.
Check the diamond face-up at a normal viewing distance.
Ask where the main inclusion sits and whether it is reflected around the stone.
Consider durability if a characteristic reaches the surface or lies near a vulnerable edge.
Compare the stone’s beauty as a whole rather than judging the grade in isolation.

Can an inclusion make a diamond weaker?
Most inclusions do not create a durability problem, but the type and location matter. A knowledgeable jeweller can help you assess an individual stone.
Is a flawless diamond always the best choice?
It is rarer, but not automatically the best value. Many lower-clarity diamonds appear completely clean without magnification.
Does diamond shape affect clarity?
Yes. Step-cut shapes such as emerald cuts have broad, open facets that can make inclusions easier to notice than in many brilliant-cut shapes.
